Tales of the Todd

The Todd River
Using this Web Site

The set of activities found on this Web site is focused on high school learning and gives a daily curriculum over a 2 week period. It provides an introduction to freshwater supplies around the world, and a basic understanding of the function of freshwater systems in central Australia. >> start day 1 activities

The Todd River

A Dry Todd RiverThe Todd River is widely recognised as an icon of Alice Springs and central Australia. Photos of the Todd in its many different guises appear in tourism brochures, newspapers and magazines, and personal albums across the world. Whether it be ‘The Todd in Flood’ or ‘Henley on Todd’, ‘Taking a Camel to Dinner’ or ‘The Todd from a Hot Air Balloon’, ‘The Original Alice Springs’ or ‘The Arrival of the Last Camel Train’ … there are a wealth of stories to be told about ‘The Todd’!

This resource has been produced to:

    The Todd River in Flood
  • support teachers in developing awareness, knowledge and understanding, and skills to allow them to engage productively in their classrooms with the 'Year of Freshwater' and more specifically with the 2003 Alice Springs National Science Week programme linked to the same theme
  • develop an educational focus on an Alice Springs 'icon' that complements other community projects with a similar focus such as the Alice in 10 Todd and Charles Project
  • develop an on-going educational resource that will be of interest nationally and even internationally, with opportunities to compare and contrast features of other 'iconic' river systems

Using the ‘Tales of the Todd’ Web

The lesson notes on this site focus on a range of topics linked to the Todd River in central Australia. They are not directed at any particular age group, although they are most suitable for the middle secondary school years. It sets students up for achieving a range of outcomes across the NTCF depending which direction you choose to take. It has been developed by a collaboration of groups organised through the Centre for Arid Zone Research, part of the CSIRO Sustainable Ecosystems, with the Alice Springs Desert Park education officer.

The ‘starter’ ideas are just that – some information and a few questions to get you started on some activities or research.

Some of the focus topics have extra information attached, sometimes to make the lesson easier for you but sometimes aimed at suggesting other directions you might take the lesson or formats for presenting information as it is collected.

A Dust Storm Looms Over Alice SpringsMany of the stimulus questions don’t have one answer – they are open to suggestion and discussion and may depend on the value system of the class or individuals within the class. Some of the questions need the help of an ‘expert’ to answer them; or try the internet or reference books in the library.

If you want to go beyond The Todd in your focus, by all means do so – care and management of fresh water and the river systems it flows along is one of the most crucial things you can educate people about in an arid zone environment, because opportunities to recharge supplies are few and far between and highly unpredictable, and the permanence of such supplies (even in underground storage) is never assured!
