A Todd River Bushwalk
Here you can see the kites soaring around looking for food. They seem to hang around in big flocks and sometimes fight for food. They pick up their food in their feet and often eat on the wing so the other birds can’t get to it. Also it takes lots of energy to land and take off again so its not really worth it.
As you walk along the river bed, you can see evidence of others using it as a pathway. There seem to be animal tracks that look like cattle have been here, and also motor vehicles, as well as other people. If you look closer you can see smaller tracks like birds and maybe some lizards. Dry river beds have always been used as pathways because they are easy to follow and you know there is likely to be water somewhere close by, even if you have to dig for it under the ground.
You can see here where loads of sand and river rubble have been deposited after the river has flowed. The water must have been quite deep here because there is a tyre swing that someone has made. We think its OK to do this, but maybe people should take their things home with them afterwards.
We found lots of baby gum trees growing in the river bed. We think they’re river Red Gums because they have red stems. If the river doesn’t run for a while, seeds get a chance to stay in one place and germinate in the sand. We’ve seen quite a few dead trees so its good to see they are being replaced by new ones.
